Indian Customs vs Scientific Reasons....
Believe it or not, there is mostly scientific reason behind Hindu rules and beliefs. We sometimes feel that traditions are superstitions but with the advent of science , it has become evident that all age old beliefs have scientific reasons and moved from generations to generations as traditions which we follow in our day to day lives. I often questioned myself as to why I need to follow such rules, who thought so, made it public and finally a tradition to be followed in generations to come. Today I wanted to share some ideas which I collected over these, and here it goes.....
One of the very important points to discuss is the Sleeping Position... One should never sleep with head towards south or west.... As per Hindu mythology Sun God rises in east so we should not put our feet towards him, also one should not put feet towards south as after death the body is placed in that position so it is not considered auspicious. Well, we do have scientific reasons behind this and it is related to earth's magnetic field which is stretched from north towards south.
Even our body has similar magnetic stretch with positive(north pole) in head and negative (south pole) towards feet. As we all know opposite poles attract and similar ones repel each other. Same concept applies when we place our head (north pole)towards north direction. This causes repulsion and since earth's magnetic field is much stronger than ours, we are the losers and this causes headaches or heaviness when we wake up after sleep. It might also cause irritation, frustration, loss of will power, etc.
Next is why we should not put feet towards east while sleeping. Is it only because we disregard Sun God????? The answer is NO..... We worship Sun God so as a token of respect we avoid putting feet towards east, but we do have scientific logic behind this too. Our earth revolves from west to east and sun's magnetic field enters earth from east side. This magnetic
force enters our head if we lie with head on the east and exits through
feet, promoting cool heads and warm feet as per the laws of magnetism
and electricity. When we put our head towards west, cool feet and
hot head. The result is an unpleasant start for morning.
Now we may realize why the ancient people said, that our intellect
improves by east facing head or house, and life lengthens with the head
facing south.
North brings disease and west dulls the brain. They gave us a few more
healing hints for a healthy sleep. Never lie on one side for long. Keep
changing while sleeping......
There are some other beliefs too as follows below:
1. Sitting cross-legged on floor while eating.
Reason: Our stomach gets pressed inside and no matter how much we eat we never feel overeaten, because when we stand after eating the intestines come to original potion leaving some space in stomach.
2. Making water boundary around plates before eating.
Reason: The water mark puts ants and other creatures/insects away from food while eating.
3. Joining both palms while greeting (Namaskar.... giving respect).
Reason: This ensures joining fingertips which are considered as pressure points of eyes, ears and mind. This activates the pressure points and we remember the person for a longer time. And, no germs since we do not make any physical contact.
4. Throwing coins in river.
Reason: In ancient times, coins were made of copper and throwing them into river was one way our fore-fathers ensured we intake sufficient copper as part
of the water as rivers were the only source of drinking water. This turned out to be custom and ensured that we follow the practice as copper is vital metal and is very useful to body.
5. Tilak over the forehead.
Reason: Over the forehead, between the eyebrows is a nerve point in human body. Tilak prevents the "loss of energy" and Kumkum between eyebrows is said to "retain the energy and promote concentration". While applying kumkum the points on the mid-brow region and Adnya-chakra
are automatically pressed. This also facilitates the blood supply to
the face muscles.
6. Applying Mehndi/Henna on hands during wedding or occasions.
Reason: Mehndi is powerful medicinal herb and apart from leaving color on hands it also relieves from stress and tension because it cools the
body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense. This is the reason why
mehndi is applied on the hands and feet, which house nerve endings in
the body.
7. Touching feet (Charan Sparsh).
Reason: The nerves that start from our brain spread across all our body. These nerves or wires end in the fingertips of our hands and feet. When we join the fingertips of our hand to those of the opposite feet, a circuit is immediately formed and the energies of two bodies are connected. Our fingers and palms become the "receptor" of energy and the feet of other person become the "giver" of energy.
